Shane Watson to return home early from Champions League T20 ? Cricket News Update

Australian all-rounder Shane Watson is set to return home early from the Champions League T20 tournament in South Africa to manage workload and prepare for the longer format of the game ahead of the home Test series against the World No. 1 Proteas, commencing next month.

Watson, 31, has not played in the longest format of the game since April this year. He also missed the ODI series against Pakistan in August due to a calf injury, which he had sustained during tour of England in July.

He has been playing T20 cricket since returning to the field last month and has been key contributor for the Aussies with bat and ball. He was adjudged as the Player of the tournament in the recently concluded ICC World T20 championship in Sri Lanka, despite his side?s semi-final ouster.

Currently he is in South Africa playing for the Sydney Sixers in the latest edition of the CLT20, and scored 46 for his team during their 14-run win over the former champions Chennai Super Kings.

The champions league made him miss the start of the 2012/13 Sheffield Shield trophy, where he plays for New South Wales.

But with the crucial Test series against Australia approaching, the Cricket Australia management on Monday decided to recall the veteran all-rounder early from the CLT20, amid fears of burnout and lack of practice in the longer form of the game.

Cricket Australia?s chief executive James Sutherland on Monday said that considering Watson's injury prone body, his workload was being monitored closely and was expected to return home sometime this week.

"We're concerned about Shane. His injury record is unfortunate and what that tells us is that we need to monitor him and manage him very carefully," Sutherland told media reporters.

"The priority will be for him to get himself right as possible ... to give him a little bit of a break, then give him a little bit of therapy...give him opportunity to play a Shield game and at least play with the red ball."

"I think it's reasonably well known that it's likely he won't see the tournament out...he's the sort of player who can win series and certainly win Test matches for Australia," he added further.
