Brand New Energy recalls dietary supplement in US

FBR Staff Writer
Published 31 August 2012

Brand New Energy (BNE), a dietary supplement re-sale distributor, is recalling all lot codes of dietary supplement EphBurn 25 due to possible health risk, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall was initiated after one lot of EphBurn 25 was sampled by the FDA and was found to contain ephedrine alkaloids, making it an unapproved drug.

Ephedrine is commonly used as a stimulant, appetite suppressant, concentration aid, and decongestant, and weight loss aid. A number of adverse effects associated with ephedrine alkaloid-containing dietary supplements have been reported to the FDA.

These include elevated blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, nerve damage, muscle injury, and psychosis and memory loss. More serious effects have also been reported, including heart attack, stroke, seizure and death.

This recall affects all lot codes and use by dates of EphBurn 25. The product is a 90-count bottle with red capsules and prominently displays the product name 'ephBURN 25' in white letters on the front of a red label. EphBurn 25 was previously discontinued on or about May of 2012.

The product was distributed to various retail stores nationwide, and was sold via the Internet from the period of time of approximately April 2010 through August 2012. No other products distributed by BNE are subject to recall.

There have been no reports of adverse events associated with this recalled product.

Consumers who may have purchased EphBurn 25 have been asked to immediately discontinue using the product and contact their health care professional if they have experienced any adverse effects.

Microsoft couple Lee Dirks and Judy Lew killed in car accident in Peru

Lee Dirks

Lee Dirks and Judy Lew, a married couple who both worked at Microsoft, were killed in a car accident this week in Peru, where they were celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary. Their driver was also killed in the crash when the SUV they were riding in went off a highway and into a 1,300-foot ravine, according to local media reports.

They are survived by two young children, according to a post by the University of Washington Information School, where Dirks was a major supporter and taught as adjunct faculty.

A Microsoft spokesman said this evening, ?We are saddened by the tragic accident that took our colleagues, Lee Dirks and Judy Lew.? Both were respected leaders with their teams, who understandably, are in a state of shock. ?We extend our sincere condolences to his family and colleagues.?

Dirks, who joined Microsoft in 1996, was director of portfolio strategy in Microsoft Research Connections, a group inside the company that collaborates with academics and research groups on projects to solve major scientific and social challenges. Lew, also a veteran Microsoft employee, worked in the Microsoft Office group.

?Lee was one of those guys that was friends with everyone. HUGE smile! Always there for you!? wrote?Savas Parastatidis, a former colleague of Dirks, in a post earlier today.

The UW iSchool says details on a memorial service are pending.

Cloud Security Provider Zscaler Scales Up, Takes Its First Outside ...

Zscaler, a provider of cloud security services to small businesses, corporates and service providers, has raised a hefty $38 million round led by an unnamed investor, with participation from?Lightspeed Venture Partners.

This is the first outside investment ever taken by Zscaler, which was founded in 2007, and had in the past been funded internally. The company is currently cash-flow positive, but it?s getting the new injection of funds from Lightspeed to scale up its business: the investment, Zscaler says, will be used for?product development ? particularly in the area of mobility ? and to expand Zscaler?s sales and marketing efforts.

Like Qualys (which in June filed for a $100 million IPO), Symplified (which took a $20m round in January),?CloudPassage ($14m in April) and Bit9 ($34.5m in July), Zscaler is tackling the growing area of cloud-based security services for businesses.

That market is being fuelled by the three main trends: a greater emphasis on infrastructure-free, lower-cost cloud-based IT services; a growth in mobile devices and the use of social networks, with both often outside the control of corporate IT; and a growing number of security breaches of corporate networks, which can cost businesses millions to fix.

Zscaler already has a sizeable business: it offers solutions for web security, email security, securing corporate data on mobile devices and data loss prevention, which it offers on a single platform to its clients. It?operates the Zscaler ThreatLabZ research labs, which monitor billions of daily web transactions from millions of users worldwide to identify and alert customers of new and emerging threats.

And it has a lot of users:?Zscaler says it works with 2,500 clients, currently protecting some 8 million users across 160 countries, with clients including the Lay-z-boy furniture company and the multinational operator Telefonica. A TechCrunch contributor even highlighted it as a disruptive presence in the market for being one of the newer players eating into the marketshare of larger competitors like Cisco and Symantec.

But while Zscaler has played hard-to-get with investors before, it saw in Lightspeed a strategic partner that could help it reach its next stage of growth beyond all of the above.

?To date, we have resisted outside investment despite numerous inquiries from top-tier investors,? said Zscaler CEO Jay Chaudhry in a statement. ?Our new strategic partners share our vision and are committed to helping Zscaler build a long-lasting business.?

Ravi Mahtre, managing director at Lightspeed, notes that Zscaler?s unique selling point of a truly infrastructure-free security service is better at catching threats that traditional systems might miss. ??Many security vendors are putting appliances in the cloud and calling it cloud security,? he said in a statement. ?Zscaler is the only company that has the right architecture to securely enable the mobile, cloud and social media applications that often bypass traditional security altogether.?

As a leader in Gartner?s Magic Quadrant, Zscaler enforces business policy, mitigates risk and provides twice the functionality at a fraction of the cost of current solutions, utilizing a multi-tenant, globally-deployed infrastructure. Zscaler?s integrated, cloud-delivered security services include Web Security, Mobile Security, Email Security and DLP. Zscaler services enable organizations to provide the right access to the right users, from any place and on any device?all while empowering the end-user with a rich Internet experience. Clijsters says goodbye with 2nd-round loss at Open

NEW YORK (AP) ? Preparing for what she knew would be her last professional tennis tournament, Kim Clijsters ? four-time Grand Slam title winner; mother of 4-year-old Jada ? devoted her effort and energy to the U.S. Open.

Family time needed to wait a tad longer.

"She was like, 'Why don't you come with us to go out, go for a walk?' I'm like, 'Mama's almost done,'" Clijsters said Wednesday after her singles career ended where she wanted it to, just not the way she hoped. "So, yeah, I think she's going to be excited to kind of have her mom around more, on a more regular kind of basis."

Little Jada's gain is the tennis tour's loss.

Clijsters lost 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) to 18-year-old Laura Robson of Britain in the second round of the U.S. Open, and will head into retirement after she finishes playing doubles at Flushing Meadows.

"It's been an incredible journey, and a lot of dreams for me have come true because of tennis. As a little girl, I got Christmas rackets under the tree and outfits of Steffi Graf and Monica Seles, and I would want to wear them to bed, I was so excited," Clijsters said. "So for me to have been able to have been a part of women's tennis, and on top of women's tennis for so many years ? you don't think about it when you're in it; you're kind of on automatic pilot. ... Now that I think about it, it's been a crazy rollercoaster at times, as well."

She walked away from the sport once before, in May 2007, then returned after a hiatus of two-plus years. Now 29, the Belgian insisted this season that she means it this time, and decided the U.S. Open ? and its hard courts that she conquered on the way to three championships ? would be her final tournament.

"It's the place that has inspired me so much to do well and to do great things. It's hard to explain sometimes why," Clijsters said in an on-court interview, her face flushed and her eyes welling with tears.

"This completely feels like the perfect place to retire," Clijsters told the spectators at Arthur Ashe Stadium, many of whom rose to shower her with a standing ovation. "I just wish it wasn't today."

The loss Wednesday ended Clijsters' 22-match winning streak in New York, encompassing titles in 2005, 2009 and 2010, plus Monday's first-round victory.

She missed the hard-court major in 2004, 2006-08 and last year, thanks to a combination of injuries and the time she took off while starting a family. Clijsters was married in 2007, and Jada was born in February 2008. By August 2009, Clijsters was back on tour; unseeded and unranked, because she only played in two previous tournaments during her comeback, she won that year's U.S. Open.

"Since I retired the first time, it's been a great adventure for my team and my family," said Clijsters, who was 28-0 against players ranked outside the top 10 at the U.S. Open before Wednesday. "It's all been worth it. But I do look forward to the next part of my life coming up."

Her previous defeat at Flushing Meadows came against Belgian rival Justine Henin on Sept. 6, 2003, in the tournament final. Robson was 9 at the time.

This did have the feel, in some ways, of a changing of the guard.

Clijsters finished with a career singles record of 523-127 (a winning percentage of .805) and 41 titles, including her last major trophy at the 2011 Australian Open. She spent a total of 20 weeks ranked No. 1, as recently as February 2011.

"I hate to lose. My husband and I, we play ping pong in our garage, and I don't even want to give him a point," Clijsters said, rubbing her palms together.

Ranked 89th, and with only one prior victory over a woman ranked in the top 25, Robson has been viewed ? particularly back home in Britain ? as an up-and-coming player whose smooth left-handed strokes would carry her far.

But she had never produced the kind of grit and court-covering athleticism that carried her past the 23rd-seeded Clijsters. And until now, Robson never had won more than one match in a Grand Slam tournament; her claim to fame had been teaming for a silver medal in mixed doubles at the London Olympics with Andy Murray, who reached the U.S. Open's third round by beating 118th-ranked Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 in the last match Wednesday night.

Robson knows how much Clijsters means to the game, not only as a superb player but as someone who by all accounts is universally liked ? by fans, tennis officials and even opponents.

"She's always been someone that I've looked up to since I started on the tour. She's always been incredibly nice to be around," Robson said. "I think we're all going to miss her."

When the contest ended with Clijsters sailing a backhand return long, allowing Robson to convert her third match point, they met at the net. Clijsters began to extend her arm for the customary handshake, and Robson pulled her in for a hug.

"I want to thank Kim," Robson told the crowd, "for being such a great role model to me for so many years."

Less than an hour later, Clijsters was hanging out in the players' garden alongside the stadium. She shared a laugh with some friends, hugs from others, and paused to pose for a photograph alongside 14-time major champion Serena Williams, who was headed out after partnering sister Venus for a first-round victory in doubles.

Clijsters was the only woman of real significance who lost on Day 3, when the winners included No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, four-time major champion Maria Sharapova, defending champion Sam Stosur, 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and 2011 French Open champion Li Na.

"The whole tour is certainly going to miss having her around. She's been a great player and a great person," Stosur said about Clijsters. "I guess she's ready to do other things. She's definitely one of those people that you can look up to and really admire with what she's been able to achieve."

Joining Robson with a surprise victory was American wild-card entry Mallory Burdette, the NCAA runner-up who reached the third round in her Grand Slam debut by eliminating 69th-ranked Lucie Hradecka 6-2, 6-4.

Until recently, Burdette planned to take premed courses as a senior at Stanford in pursuit of a career in psychiatry.

"It's been a crazy ride," the 252nd-ranked Burdette said.

Could get even wilder: She next faces Sharapova, a 6-0, 6-1 winner Wednesday night over 78th-ranked Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain.

Earlier on Ashe, the highest-ranked American man, John Isner, let out a big exhale of relief while waving to the crowd after getting past an argumentative Xavier Malisse 6-3, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (9) in the first round.

"I know in the nitty-gritty times of a match, I always have that confidence and all those wins in my back pocket," said Isner, who is 37-13 in tiebreakers this season.

The 6-foot-9 Isner hit 20 aces and ended things with a service winner on his third match point. That came after Malisse pushed an easy backhand volley into the net, then grabbed the ball and shoved it in his mouth and chomped on it as though it were an apple.

The 57th-ranked Malisse, a 2002 Wimbledon semifinalist, was louder and angrier during a few exchanges with the chair umpire and even members of the crowd, earning a warning for profanity.

"Half of the crowd doesn't understand what's going on," Malisse said. "They yell. We're in New York. So you're going to get more yells. That's fine by me. ... (But) I'm going to say something back."

There were no such shenanigans during Clijsters vs. Robson, simply plenty of terrific play.

With her husband ? Brian Lynch, an American who used to play professional basketball in Belgium ? fidgeting from his front-row seat in the stands, Clijsters wound up getting the worse of lengthy exchanges. As big a forehand as Clijsters owns, Robson was out-hitting her, compiling a 16-11 edge in winners off that wing.

Clijsters went up a break in the second set, helped by a pair of double-faults by a slightly shaky Robson ? nerves that were understandable, given the setting and the significance of this match. But Robson got right back in it, playing gutsy, go-for-the-lines tennis, repeatedly pounding the ball hard as can be, and seeing shots land right where she aimed.

"I really enjoyed myself out there," said Robson, who found herself singing along to the pop songs that blare over loudspeakers during changeovers.

As you might expect from a teen, the youngest player ranked in the WTA's top 100.

Try as she might, Clijsters could not quite gain the upper hand, no matter how many times she yelled "Come on!" and raised a clenched fist after winning points.

On one well-disguised drop shot by Robson, Clijsters raced forward and did her trademark splits through the doubles alley, stretching to get her racket on the ball. But her response landed in the net.

"I just wasn't good enough at the end of the match," Clijsters acknowledged.

And now? What does she look forward to the most?

The answer came quickly: "Being home."

Persia ? June 2012 |

Following on from Anatolia, we were in the mood for more food from that part of the world (and beyond!). We spied a graduation dinner deal on 5pm for Persia on Great Western Road, neither of us were graduating but I didn?t see any other dinners with mortar boards or gowns and no one asked for proof so?

To begin,

Spicy Pomegranate chicken wings

Spicy Pomegranate chicken wings

Spicy chicken wings (?4.90) in a pomegranate sauce, which weren?t all that spicy and I?m not sure where the pomegranate was either but 4 char-grilled chicken wings with salad still made for a decent starter.

Dolmeh felfel

Dolmeh felfel

A large stuffed green?pepper (?5.50) delicately spiced with a rather random mish-mash of salady bits around the edge. It was all tasty though.

Ghaimeh bademjaan

Ghaimeh bademjaan

For the mains, we both opted for curried lamb stews and?Ghaimeh bademjaan (?9.90) consisted of diced lamb with chana dal and cinnamon in a light tomato sauce with baby aubergine, served with white saffron rice. Again, I don?t know if my?taste-buds?were failing me but I couldn?t detect any cinnamon or saffron, but once again it was still tasty.

Ghormeh sabzi

Ghormeh sabzi

Ghormeh sabzi (?9.90), in addition to lamb it contained?spinach, parsley, green onions, coriander and shanbalileh (whatever that is!?) with dried lime, red kidney beans and served again with saffron rice. I ordered this because it looked unusual, and it was?a bit too unusual. It was very?green!?My taste-buds were?definitely?up to no good, all I could taste were the parsley and coriander, which I like in moderation, but this was a bit overkill. The lamb was cooked nicely so I ate it up but I don?t think I?ll be ordering this again.

Onto dessert?

Strawberry Cheesecake

Strawberry Cheesecake

I love cheesecake (?3.90) and this was decent but tasted shop-bought.

Baghlava

Baghlava

The Baghlava (?3.50) was a bit hard for me, I was hoping for soft and syrupy not crunchy.

Total cost for 3 courses and a drink each ? ?33.80. The?prices in brackets are the regular A La Carte prices though and not the special price we paid for the 3 courses (as that menu is no longer available). Overall decent food but not great though service was?friendly and attentive.

Home and Family Counselling: Short Term Financial Assistance for ...

There will be time that your short term bill is cornering you. Making the payment as soon as possible is a wise priority. To do that in an instant, there will be more than good intention is needed. You will need fresh money anyway. If you have something to sell such as jewelry, it will be a quick shortcut. But be sure not to make it as a habit because selling all that precious to you will only let you have none to face bigger financial problem in the future.?

To avoid losing the precious stuff for such short term need, you will need to make a clear evaluation on your spending pattern. Tick off the need that is waste your money too much from the list will be a good start. If you love to drink alcoholic stuff, stop yourself from such habit actually will help you financially. The same thing is also worth to consider who spend more on something that will ruin your health and takes your time needlessly.

Since the evaluation will not give you fresh cash instantly, taking the online payday loans will be the next to do. You can use the money to pay your bill only. Never borrow more than you need. Such attitude will only let you taken into more serious financial problem. Any failure in paying the loan on time will also lower your approval level in the future.

Not your grandfather's outsourcing | Computerworld Blogs

Outsourcing has become a bit of a dirty word this election season, too often used synonymously with offshoring, which is really only one of many outsourcing strategies. However,? from a CIO?s perspective, outsourcing may be in fact what enables U.S. companies to compete, thrive, and otherwise move the economy out of the doldrums.

Too big for one ?mechanic?

While the outsourcing of past eras was a cost-cutting tactic, these days companies are just as likely to outsource IT functions for agility?s sake for the simple reason that the number of complex technologies they?re leveraging is burgeoning beyond the ability of in-house management. Think of the evolution of IT in terms of the automobile. Initially it was pretty straightforward, and one mechanic could handle all of your needs. As it grew in complexity -- i.e. transmission, air conditioning, electronics, etc. -- one service department was no longer sufficient. The addition of onboard computers added a new layer of complexity, making the maintenance of a single car a task for a broad team of experts that are rarely found under a single roof (except at the dealership, but service fees are ridiculous).

Similarly, IT -- admittedly more complex than a car from its outset -- has grown from a relatively well-defined, straightforward function into an entity with its hands in literally every facet of business. The recent addition of flexible technologies such as cloud, mobile and social, has blown the lid off of all previous limits to to technology adoption. Implementations that used to take years and cost millions now take days or weeks, and cost a fraction of what they used to. If companies can adopt technologies with a tenth of the resources that it required a few years ago, it follows that they?ll be leveraging 10 times the number of technologies -- and that?s exactly what they?re doing.

I daresay that even the most well-funded in-house IT department cannot?be reasonably expected to manage the sudden explosion of technologies that are making their way into everyday work life at most organizations. To do so would be akin to running a garage that serviced everything from oil changes to collision damage.

Outsourcing to tame the beast

Cloud computing is no small contributor to this phenomenon, as the technologies delivered via the cloud often do not require the same level of maintenance that on-premise software demands. Conversely, when they do require attention, the skills needed are often extremely difficult to come by. An outsourcing model, therefore, enables CIOs to manage a set of technologies that they?d otherwise not be able to govern with full-time staff. To the point, my firm recently conducted research which showed that, on average, 48% of outsourcing budgets are allocated towards application services.

Furthermore, some IT functions are so specialized that they?re really not practical for most departments, regardless of size. In our research, for example, we also found that companies are commonly leveraging managed services as an outsourcing strategy to handle such functions as disaster recovery, web/e-commerce and IT security services.

The new outsourcing, therefore, has much less to do with saving a buck through cheap labor, and much more to do with what has been described as the human cloud. Just as cloud-based resources are ?elastic,? so are the teams that most effectively manage them. This also has implications for small-to-medium-sized businesses who, thanks to the cloud, can actually compete on a much more level playing field now that they can essentially outsource their tech needs.

Sending jobs overseas: not inevitable

Before you start thinking about jobs going overseas, let me clarify that the term ?outsourcing? simply refers to leveraging an external provider for a previously internal function. Under this broader definition, even SaaS can be considered a form of outsourcing, because all the hosting, maintenance and upkeep is done externally.

You may argue that outsourcing inherently implies offshoring, because someone overseas will always be able to undercut domestic professionals, pricetag-wise. This would be true if cost were the sole driver of outsourcing. Our research also showed, however, that while productivity and profitability are still major drivers, CIOs are also likely to employ outsourcing strategies for the flexibility to turn resources on and off, and for access to experts and hard-to-find talent. Such talent, I daresay, is highly coveted and sought after, regardless of where they hang their hat. Domestically-based experts, who don?t have cultural, linguistic or temporal hurdles to overcome, will be well-positioned as companies increasingly look to contractors to deliver agility.

'Modern Family' creator has role for Ann Romney

Peter Stone / ABC

The "Modern Family" cast.

By Alexis L. Loinaz, E! Online

Ann Romney might be gearing up for her role as potential first lady, but she might also wanna prep for another one: TV star. Mitt Romney's 63-year-old missus openly professed her love for "Modern Family" to Entertainment Tonight, and now its creator, Steve Levitan, has offered her a spot on the show -- while slyly taking dig at her husband's anti-gay-marriage stance.

The showrunner took to Twitter yesterday and wrote: "Thrilled Ann Romney says ModFam is her favorite show. We'll offer her the role of officiant at Mitch & Cam's wedding. As soon as it's legal."

"Modern Family" kids negotiate salary raise

Now there's a canny casting stunt for TV sweeps week!

Levitan, of course, was clearly taking swipe at the Republican presidential candidate, who's been a vocal opponent of gay marriage.

Belgian pedophile accomplice gets early release

BRUSSELS (AP) ? One of Belgium's most despised criminals, the accomplice and former wife of a pedophile and child killer who let two of his victims starve to death, left prison for a convent after serving barely half her 30-year sentence.

The nation's highest court on Tuesday approved a ruling that Michelle Martin can leave prison early despite her part in the mid-1990s kidnappings, rapes and killings by her then-husband, Marc Dutroux.

Prison spokesman Laurent Sempot said Martin left prison in an unmarked vehicle late Tuesday.

Paul Marchal, whose daughter An was one of Dutroux's victims, says "there is only one word for this. This is simply absurd."

Clooney aids Obama campaign with Geneva fundraiser

GENEVA (AP) ? George Clooney raised almost $15 million for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign at the actor's Los Angeles home in May. For his second act, Clooney is set to arrive Monday in Geneva, a center for international organizations, governance and business.

Organizers expect to pull in a more modest amount of about $500,000 from U.S. donors for Obama's campaign, with many flying in to Geneva from around the world.

Americans Abroad for Obama, the event's sponsor, says on its Web site that guests are paying $15,000 per person to dine with Clooney, $5,000 for a photo with him and $1,000 to attend a reception before the dinner. About 30 people are attending the dinner, with at least 100 at the reception.

The event is co-hosted by Geneva-based American lawyer Charles C. Adams Jr. and Matthew Barzun, Obama's campaign finance chairman. The dinner is being held at Adams' home in an historic part of the city overlooking Lake Geneva, where Adams held a previous fundraiser for Obama in 2008.

Clooney was due to arrive in Geneva from the villa where he typically spends time during the summer on northern Italy's Lake Como. Obama campaign officials in Washington have declined to comment on the fundraiser.

The president has called the actor and director a good friend who tries to keep his distance so Obama won't be criticized for hanging out with Hollywood celebrities. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight earlier this month, Obama said he got to know Clooney through his work on Sudan when Obama was in the U.S. Senate. Clooney has led campaigns to end the conflict in Darfur, Sudan, and for more humanitarian aid for millions of people caught up in the fighting.

The Democratic president and Republican challenger Mitt Romney have both been aggressively hunting for campaign money overseas, seeking any advantage in a tight race that's expected to stay that way into the fall. Each has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in this fashion, not including the sums raised overseas by both party committees, though it is just a fraction of the more than $300 million Obama has raised overall and the $155 million raised by Romney.

American citizens and green-card holders can legally donate regardless of where they live, subject to the $2,500-per-person contribution limit that applies to those living stateside. U.S. law bans foreigners from contributing to political campaigns. Campaigns, the parties and political committees are expected to review donors and reject any ineligible contributions.

Ukraine court to rule on Tymoshenko appeal on Wednesday

KIEV (Reuters) - A high court in Ukraine will rule on Wednesday on former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko's appeal against her abuse-of-office conviction and seven-year prison sentence - a case that has soured Kiev's ties with the West.

The European Union shelved landmark deals on political association and free trade with Ukraine after a local court sent Tymoshenko to prison last October over a gas deal brokered with Russia in 2009 as prime minister.

The government of President Viktor Yanukovich, Tymoshenko's long-time political foe, says the agreement went against national interests and saddled Ukraine with an exorbitant price for vital energy supplies.

Tymoshenko, one of the leaders of the 2004 Orange Revolution protests that derailed Yanukovich's first bid for presidency, says she is the victim of a vendetta by Yanukovich, who narrowly beat her for the presidency in February 2010.

Her prosecution will be a major issue in the parliamentary election on October 28 when Yanukovich's Party of the Regions will seek to keep its control of parliament.

Tymoshenko's lawyers argued in court this month that negotiating the gas agreement with Russia had been a political act which did not amount to criminal action.

Tymoshenko, 51, has not attended the appeal trial herself, receiving treatment for back trouble in a state-run hospital since May.

"The full text of the ruling...will be announced on August 29, 2012, at 10 a.m.," the court said on its website on Monday.

Her supporters are not expecting the high court to acquit Tymoshenko and are pinning their hopes on the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) which can start looking into the case after she has exhausted her appeals at home.

However, Tymoshenko could stay in prison even after winning an appeal in Strasbourg as local prosecutors have brought more charges against her.

In a separate trial, where hearings are set to resume on September 11, Tymoshenko is accused of embezzlement and tax evasion going back to alleged offences when she was in business in the 1990s.

Medicare: Republicans say they're ready to rumble. Is that wise?

The coming election may be about jobs, jobs, jobs, but Republicans at the National Convention are vowing to take the battle to the Democrats on Medicare, too. They may have had little choice.

By David Grant,?Staff writer / August 27, 2012

Delegates watch a video presentation during an abbreviated session of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., on Monday, Aug. 27.

House Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio was just as adamant Monday at the Republican National Convention as he has been for months prior: the coming election will be about jobs and jobs alone.

But there?s another issue on which congressional Republicans say they?re spoiling for a fight ? Medicare.

In fact, while conventions are always chock full of optimistic bluster, one top Republican masterminding the party?s attempt to win House seats made a boast Monday that foretells a head-on collision over the decidedly non-jobs issue.

?I predict, in two weeks, the Democrats stop talking about Medicare because they will have officially lost this issue,? said Guy Harrison, executive director of the National Republican Congressional Committee at a briefing with reporters Monday. ?You just watch ? they?re going to start going to another issue. Because for all their talk, they know how bad Obamacare is for them.?

For Republicans, the calculus appears to be that Democrats, who traditionally outpoll them on Medicare policy, were going to jam the issue down their throats whether they liked it or not. So they better get ahead of the curve ? and fast.

?The [Medicare] debate, if we didn?t want to have it, was going to be conducted by late-night phone calls from Democratic phone banks to seniors and ugly mail pieces scaring the crap out of them,? Karl Rove, an influential GOP strategist and powerbroker who helps direct the largest Republican super PAC, said at a breakfast sponsored by POLITICO. ?And I?d rather have the discussion now ? we know as a country that these things are going broke.?

Speaker Boehner was a bit less strident ? although no less aggressive-minded ? in his own remarks at a lunch sponsored by The Christian Science Monitor. Boehner noted his heavy travel schedule stumping in August for House candidates, with a special focus on so-called ?orphan? races in New York, California, and Illinois. More than a dozen races in those states are seen as key opportunities for Democrats hoping to retake the House, because the states lean Democratic and will see no investment from the Republican presidential campaign of Mitt Romney.

?Republicans are on offense on all the big issues, whether it?s jobs, spending, even Medicare,? Boehner said. ?That means we?re on offense in all the big races as well.?

Two weeks, in theory, to send the Democrats packing on Medicare would put the cease-fire just a week after the conclusion of the Democrats? own convention, being held next week in Charlotte, N.C.

Dragons... For hundreds of years, these majestic masters of the sky graced the world of Lyte; epics have been written narrating tales of their illustrious pearly scales glittering high in the air, dipping in betweenst the cloud not unlike dolphins. Though they were a creature of unquestionable beauty, their ferocity in combat was equally unmatched--or so we all thought.

Dragon hunters arose in legions, eager to prove their might against the fiercest of all. Not all succeeded, but those who managed to somehow best the beasts were treated with honor and nobility, for if one could beat the Masters of the Sky, truly they must be incredible. Unbeknownst to the people of Lyte, the hunting of dragons were dwindling their numbers down to a dangerous few, but when they finally realized their mistake, it was too late, and the last of the dragons fell to the blade.

We now live in a time without dragons... o'er a hundreds cycles have passed. None could claim to witness one with their own eyes, and so they began to fade unto stories of regret and sorrow. Decades past in the blink of an eye, though the extinction of the Great Race still weighed heavily upon the shoulders of humans. Dragons became revered and even worshiped in some villages.

Suddenly, as if to answer their prayers, a group arose by the name of the Draconic Vigil. They were a long-aged, traditional collective whose birth rose--in secret--with that of the first dragon hunters. They brought with them out of hiding the greatest gift the world had ever seen--dragon eggs. The followers of the Draconic Vigil were given an entire valley to use as a sanctuary, in the hopes that the Great Race could be risen from the ashes, and the mistakes of the past could be washed away clean. This wondrous valley came to be know as...
Dracona Valley

Image

Some years have passed, and you have been chosen by the Draconic Vigil to be allowed entry into their sanctuary to do one thing, and one thing only: Adopt-a-Dragon. Why you, you may ask yourself. It is unsure of the method of selection the Draconic Vigil uses in such times, however they are always certain of their choice. A human must be paired up with a dragon if it is to be brought up in a world of humans. It is with this hope that when the dragons flourish freely once more, it will be as a friend of mankind. This is the highest honor of the past several ages; your home village is in such an ecstatic uproar that they throw a grand festival in your name, for bringing invaluable amounts of honor to your own. Once you've had some time to prepare, you set out on the journey across Lyte--your pilgrimage to Draconia Valley.

All the while, you know that once there you will be asked what type of dragon you'll want to adopt...

Will you choose a green dragon?

If nature is your thing, then you might just click very well with this particular type of dragon. In their own time, they were the protectors of the forests and all things living. As such, they were known to be fiercely loyal to those they considered worthy of their devotion. Their scales were said to be among one of the most breathtaking sights in all the land.

No? Perhaps a blue dragon would be right up your alley.

Armadent of our shores and seas, this particular breed of dragon was known to be the fastest fliers. Their bodies supported a more slender frame and and a wider wingspan, all in the preparation for long-term flights, almost making their endurance exceptionally good.

Still scrolling? Then surely a red dragon will tickle your fancy?

Overseer of the mountains and volcanic regions, this breed of dragon is known for having the greatest mastery over fire, and as such, can learn how to use it at a much earlier age. These intelligent dragons grow to be the second largest dragon, while keeping an average level of competence in agility and fighting, making this the most well-rounded dragon.

No...surely you aren't considering a black dragon?

You just might be that crazy, are you? These flying leviathans are by far the biggest dragon out of all the breeds. They are the Shadow Stalkers; The Living Nightmares; The Flying Death. Taming these dragons will be no simple task as you will soon notice they will outgrow you by a very young age. These dragons have a short temper and a nasty habit of not playing by the rules. If one could successful tame one though... that would be a sight to see. Then again, no one has ever raised a dragon from a hatchling before...ANY type of dragon!

Hello everyone! I go by the name Mazzy, and I'll be the GM of this RPG. I want to make something very clear right now: This is just going to be a 2-3 person RP, which means I'll only be taking on one or two people to join me on this adventure! Why, you ask? To be honest, I tried this type of RP once before, and I eventually had to abandon it because it overburdened me with too much to keep track of! You'll see why in a second when I go over what I'm offering as apart of this RP. The style we will be playing is that YOU will be the adventitious youth hoping to come and tame a dragon, while I'll be playing as...well, everything else! I will control the environments, NPCs, and random events that may happen over the course of the story.

Another reason why this is only going to be just a view people for now now... I've never done this before! Yes, I will admit to my newbiness when it comes to being a GM. I want to get my feet wet before I jump right in. Once I'm satisfied that I can even handle this RP with one person, I may consider making this a group RP, but until that time it's going to be one person.

What this RP will offer you:
+An engaging and expansive world to expore
+A quest system to keep track of what jobs need to be done
+Working marketplace
+Full map of the valley
+Dragon statistics so you know the well-being of your own dragon
+A unique dragon age-to-skill ratio that is dependent on how active and loyal you are.
+Several grand games for you and your dragon to participate in (races, fights, ect.)
+Scores of likable NPCs to interact with and befriend

What I expect from you:
+Literate RPer (Not for first-timers, sorry!)
+Guaranteed activity (The health of your dragon will depend on it!)
+A love for creativity. Just because I'm the GM, don't feel intimidated to do what you want to do! I'm providing the world and the characters, now you provide the adventure! (Note: I will also be providing quests along the way to help keep it going)
+No post limit! I understand that sometimes a post has to be short to accommodate dialogue, though I would prefer love to see a few paragraphs every post! A short post every now and again is just fine though!

Note that this project is still in it's infancy, and will take a bit longer for me to fully think out. I'm posting this right now to see if anyone would be interested in participating. Should I get some positive feedback, I will eventually make the RP and announce it to any player who asks for it (if you think you would be interested in this RP, post here saying so, and I'll PM you when it's all complete!). In the possibility that more than one person wants to join, then when the RP is created, those applicants will each create a bio for their character, and the ones who I think will click with this story the best will get in. For anyone else I give my sincerest apologies, and the promise that someday in the future I will make this a group RP, and you will be among the first I call.

Implying I get anyone who wants to do this. >.>

FAQ

Who controls my dragon, me or you?

You do! Let me worry about the boring statistics while you just enjoy time with your dragon.

How will the storyline start out?

With you first entering the Valley. Picking your dragon will be part of the storyline.

You mentioned something about a map. What will be in the valley?

Like I said, this is a work-in-progress, and as such I'm still working on that. I can tell you that there'll be a few distinct districts (Residential, marketplace, ect) for you to explore.

Does my activity REALLY effect my dragon's health?

Oh absolutely! The longer you are away, the greater your dragon's susceptibility to disease. Remember: a happy dragon means better stat bonuses!

What good are stats if I can't do anything with them?

Ah, but you can. Within the world there will be plenty of fun adventures for you and your dragon. The higher your stats, the higher chance of success. Also, certain quests will require certain stats.

I kind of want the black dragon now that you said I was crazy... made me feel all big and stuff. Is it really as hard as you say though?

Yes, a black dragon will be substantially harder to control, and its loyalty harder to earn.

Is the black dragon going to be overpowered?

Not at all! All the dragons will be fairly balanced if you decide to compare them. It comes down to what you're looking for in a dragon: loyalty, speed, intelligence, or size. This isn't to say that if you choose a blue dragon, it won't be loyal to you. It just might be harder to gain its loyalty than a green dragon. Vice versa, it might be a bit more difficult to teach a green dragon to fly as well as a blue dragon.

Feel free to ask any and all questions that you have, and I'll answer them in full.

Obama leads tributes to Armstrong

Neil Armstrong makes his "one small step"

US President Barack Obama has led tributes to astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, who died on Saturday at the age of 82.

Mr Obama said on his Twitter feed: "Neil Armstrong was a hero not just of his time, but of all time."

Hundreds of millions watched Armstrong land on the Moon on 20 July 1969 and describe it as: "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

The line became one of the most famous quotes of the 20th Century.

Armstrong's family confirmed his death in a statement on Saturday, saying he had died from complications after surgery to relieve four blocked coronary arteries.

The family statement praised him as a "reluctant American hero" and urged his fans to honour his example of "service, accomplishment and modesty".

"The next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink," the family said.

Mr Obama thanked Armstrong for showing the world "the power of one small step".

Last November he received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award.

Many of Armstrong's colleagues and friends paid tribute to him as a modest, private man who never sought the limelight.

Michael Collins, a pilot on the Apollo 11 Moon mission, said: "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly."

Armstrong famously refused most public appearances and interviews.

In a rare interview with Australian TV this year, he reflected on a moment during his three hours on the Moon when he stopped to commemorate US astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in action.

"It was special and memorable, but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do," he said.

More than 500 million TV viewers around the world watched its touchdown on the lunar surface.

Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin collected samples, conducted experiments and took photographs during their moonwalk.

Mr Aldrin told the BBC he would remember his colleague as a "very capable commander and leader of a world achievement".

"We're missing a great spokesman and leader in the space programme," he said.

Apollo 11 was Armstrong's last space mission. In 1971, he left the US space agency Nasa to teach aerospace engineering.

President Obama described him as "one of the greatest American heroes of all time"

Born in 1930 and raised in Ohio, Armstrong took his first flight aged six with his father and formed a lifelong passion for flying.

He flew Navy fighter jets during the Korean War in the 1950s, and joined the US space programme in 1962.

Correspondents say Armstrong remained modest and never allowed himself to be caught up in the glamour of space exploration.

"I am, and ever will be, a white-socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer," he said in February 2000 in a rare public appearance.

Nasa chief Charles Bolden paid tribute to him as "one of America's great explorers".

"As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own."
