DCL Track: Energy efficient

The postseason started strong for the Lincoln-Sudbury boys and girls indoor track teams.

The Warriors took all the nervous energy that comes with meets that carry extra meaning and put it to good use during the Dual County League championship meet Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Center, with the boys taking second place with 81 points and the girls earning third with 74.

Concord-Carlisle won the girls title with 89 points, while Acton-Boxboro won the boys championship with 89 points as well.

Wayland finished sixth on the girls side with 29 points, and 10th on the boys side with just 23.

"Terrific day overall for us," Lincoln-Sudbury boys coach Mel Gonsalves said. "We got beat during the regular season by Acton, Newton South and Westford, and today we were only eight points away from pulling off the whole thing. We had a lot of people step up with some outstanding performances over the course of the day. I'm extremely proud of the effort this team put forth today and I think we turned some heads as well."

Meanwhile, L-S girls coach Henry Phelan said, "We had some girls out, but I thought it was a good day overall as well. Some girls were sick and whatnot so we didn't have our full squad, but I think the effort overall was good. We obviously would have liked to have finished a bit better than third but we'll take it."

Lincoln Sudbury's Lucy Alexander won the girls high jump (5-06), while teammates Meghan Klapper (5-00) and Kristin Kimble (4-10) finished third and fourth, respectively.

"It's a great feeling," said Alexander. "We've all been working really hard this year and it finally paid off. I'm really proud of (Meghan) and (Kristin) as well. The whole team did a really good job today competing hard in every event. We would have liked to have won the whole thing but I'm definitely proud of the effort everyone gave."

Amanda Sifferlen took second place for the Warriors in the long jump (16-04) and Wayland's Kela Butts finished fourth (16-03). Butts also took second place in the 55-meter hurdles (9.18).

"I'm pretty pleased with the effort overall today," said Wayland coach Peter Galalis. "Kela had a terrific day as did Amanda. As for the team, we had a lot of kids go out and reach personal records in some events so that's always good to see as well. Obviously we'd like to be a little higher in the standings but this is pretty much what we expected coming in here today.

"The real key is the PRs for the kids. As long as they're continuing to improve then it's a good day for us as a program."

Morgane Butler of Lincoln-Sudbury finished second in the 1000-meter run (3:08.77), while Sydney Clary also finished second in the 1-mile run (5:09.08).

Josh Kerber won the boys 1000 meters for L-S (2:30.42) with teammate Luke Goodrich placing third (2:34.09). Nick Ackley placed second in the boys 600 meters (1:27.84), and Wayland's Bennett Keyes placed third in the same event (1:28.09).

"The nerves and excitement were all there today as soon as we got here," said Kerber. "You could just tell it was playoff time, everyone was ready to go today."

Ben Colello finished second for LS in the boys high jump as well with a jump of 5-10.

Both Lincoln Sudbury's 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams took first place as well. Colello, Kerber, Nick Santangelo, and Goodrich ran a time of 3:30.85 for the win in the 400. Ackley, Ryan Honens, Nick Adams and Devon Fitzpatrick won the 800 with a time of 8:43.16.
