2013 All England Open: An early exit for Arif Latif from Men?s Singles event

It was a disappointing outing for Malaysia?s young shuttler Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif in Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships as he lost his first match in the qualifying round on March 5, 2013.

He was up against a lower ranked Chinese campaigner Chen Yuekun and surrendered after a futile exercise of 50 minutes.

Arif Latif raised his chances of success by winning the opening game with 21-16 score but then his below par performance allowed the opposing shutter to seal the victory with impressive figure of 21-16 and 21-14.

This Men?s Singles battle was staged at the local badminton arena of Birmingham and both contenders kept the audience intact until the last shot was played.

The battle heated up when the Malaysian campaigner launched a brisk attack and gained an early advantage in first set. He did not lose focus in next couple of rallies and doubled his total in no time.

Arif played impeccable badminton and kept on moving forward on points table at steady pace. He piled up a mountainous figure of 11 before the interval and relished full benefits of this supremacy in latter part of the game.

Though, Chen Yuekun made effort to counterbalance the situation but he failed to tip the scale in his favour and lost this set with 16-21 margin.

However, he showed a transformed character in the following game and stunned his higher ranked rival.

This time the Chinese shuttler did not repeat his previous mistakes and served the notice of his potential. At first, he established a strong grip over game by registering an impressive figure of 11 and then swept the table with an overwhelming score of 21-16.

The decider proved a one-sided affair after the mid-game break. Initially, both contenders displayed splendid badminton craft on the court and made this a nerve-racking contest.

Things changed dramatically in the second half as Chen Yuekun proved himself superior technically and tactically. He made a significant difference on points table in third quarter of the set and ensured his victory.

Arif Latif could not come out of this deficit and gave up this futile chase after reading 12-21 total. With this defeat, he also crashed out of this prestigious event.
