Washington vs. Colorado 2012: Buffs strong first half not enough in 38-3 defeat to Huskies

The Colorado Buffaloes played some of their best football of the season in the first half on Saturday against the Washington Huskies, but allowed 31 second-half points in a 38-3 loss.

The Colorado Buffaloes (1-10, 1-7 Pac-12) played perhaps their best half of football this season on Saturday, holding the 25th-ranked Washington Huskies (7-4, 5-3) to just seven points in the first half on Saturday, but it was not enough. The Buffs gave up 31 second-half points in a 38-3 defeat. The gang over at SB Nation's Colorado blog, The Ralphie Report, succinctly summarized the performance:

A combination of defensive prowess and UW's mental sluggishness held their first half score to 7, but the statistical comparison was clearly in favor of the visiting Huskies. Parker Orms still plays, Ray Polk still gets injured, and the Buffs still yield yardage, and it could've been a lot more.

Then in the second half, the dam broke. In quick succession, the Huskies scored two touchdown on quick drives, and ultimately, Washington had four scoring drives in the third quarter, scoring 17 points to the Buffaloes 3.

Saturday was the first time all season Colorado held an opponent scoreless in the first quarter. Of course, the Buffs did not score in the half, running their scoreless streak at home to eight quarters. Colorado allowed Washington quarterback Keith Price to throw five touchdown passes, while the Buffaloes turned the ball over five times in the contest.

Colorado hosts Utah on Friday, and needs a win to avoid its worst record in school history, and its first winless season at home since 1920. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. MT.
